Are You Tired of Your Co-Pays?

Do you feel exhausted all the time?  Does life seem to racing by too fast leaving you behind? Are you out of energy, overweight, and on multiple prescription medications?  Are you tired of monitoring your blood pressure and following your blood sugars? Are you looking for reliable answers? Do you want to finally do something about it and change the course of your medical history?  If you do, then keep reading.  I want to answer some of the mysteries and unravel the truth for you.  You have the power to change the course of your medical destination.

I have been practicing Medical Weight Loss for quite some time.  I have sat for and passed my Bariatric Boards and ranked within the top 10 in the nation.  I am not tooting my own horn I am just illustrating my passion for health and wellness. I am passionate about helping people lose weight. You see, for me, I was exhausted and 80 pounds overweight. I had no energy and had lost some of my gusto in life. This was very unusual for me. I was not happy with the answers that I got from my peers, the medical community. Now, I am not blaming any doctors for the predicament that I found myself in back in 2005.  I did it myself, one bite at a time.  However, when I had permanent vocal cord damage from indigestion, I was advised by my colleague to take "the purple pill" three times a dayCan you imagine, not once or twice, but three times? I was advised to keep some in my car.  It was suggested to me to take one on my way home. Not one time was I ever asked if I drink coffee, diet coke and truckloads of junk food.

I was very non-compliant-thank the Good Lord I was!

At first, I dutifully complied.  However, I started to get an upset stomach, experience constipation, and I became anemic.  What!  You mean my treatment was actually causing me more problems?  Yes, the medical treatment can and does often cause more medical problems.  I began to look for answers. I took time away from my practice, went out of town, and pretty much took up residency in research libraries. I attended over a 1000 hours of educational conferences, webinars, teleseminars, research mastermind groups, and took fellowship with likeminded physicians. I believe that I have learned from the masters on the appropriate blending of traditional and complementary medicine.  This has become my passion because I know that traditional medicine will not cure us!  In order to be cured from what ails us, we are going to have to face some cold hard facts.

Are you chewing on a toxic shoe string?

We can no longer put 80,000 foreign chemicals in our body, forsake our genetic code, and turn to refined, highly processed food (energy) that our bodies don't recognize.  Remember, we are basic animals in many ways. Most Americans feed their livestock and their pets better than they feed their kids.  How many times have you seen a kid try and give a beloved pet a piece of junk food only to hear yourself or another adult tell them not to do that?  It is not good for Fluffy? I have and I have done it myself, in the past.

I am sure you have heard from everyone how Obesity is on the rise. In fact, one of my favorite programs to DVR, the long running CBS Sunday Morning, actually devoted an entire episode on Obesity.  I could sit here and recite for you the known medical complications of obesity.  In fact, I would have to write for hours.  The research is out there. If you have attended one of my seminars you have seen the slides from the CDC showing the epidemic of obesity that is ravaging our country.  What we do know is this:  Obesity now outranks malnutrition as the number one disorder of nutrition in the world.  More than one billion people in the world are overweight or obese.  This is also seen in Africa, a country that is highly associated with starving.  More than 33.3% of all Africans are overweight or obese. The WHO expects this number to rise to 41% in the next 10 years.  The common link has been the exportation of the American diet of refined foods and high carbohydrates such as High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Do you have the number one cause of death in America?

America is more at risk from obesity than any other medical condition.  Over 65 million American adults are now obese. This is more than the total population of England, France or Italy.  If you stop and think about these numbers, it can be overwhelming.  17% of our children are overweight or obese.

We all know that terrorism, pollution, poverty, and profound dwindling of our natural resources put our country at risk. However, the number one cause of preventable death in America is obesity. Stop and think about this fact.  I will say it again. The number one cause of preventable death in America is obesity.

Historically, we should have seen this coming but we have been completely caught off guard, or have we?  I think that over the past 50 years there has been such a profound change in the way that food is processed that this has been well scripted. Now, I am really not a conspiracy theory practitioner. However, I do believe that we have some very crafty individuals in the food industry, the food sciences, and certainly in marketing. It is true that we have had to put each bite of this food into our mouths. Nobody ever forced us to eat this "food."

However, I want to share with you some other facts about our food.  The food industry has mimicked the tobacco industry in many ways.  The researchers understand what makes us eat and have certainly opened the wound and keep pouring salt into it.  In order to understand what I mean, I am going to discuss some of the science behind eating.

Do you often eat when you are not really hungry?  I used to.

Satiety is the sensation of being full or gratified to the point of satisfaction.  When you say, "I am full" you are saying that you are satiated.  Research actually proves through multiple research labs that people eat until they reach satiety.  Those people that are consistently overweight or obese, have an impaired since of satiety.  There are many reasons for this and I will share them with you such as eating too fast, not eating enough protein, and developing a resistance to satiety.  I want to teach you what that resistance is all about. There are so many unanswered questions that you may have such as "why do I gain weight while everyone else eats more and stays the same?"

Historically, people have suffered from malnutrition, hunger and even famine. With the incredible changes in our food supply and the marketing of our food, we have seen a transformation of our bodies and our health.  Not only are our bodies strained by this dangerous trend, the entire healthcare system is on the verge of collapse. Whether you agree with the current legislative trend on healthcare reform or not, we all agree that something has to change.  I, for a fact, have seen a marked decrease in the health of my patients.  I have taken an incredible interest in my own health and have transferred my knowledge to my patients.  This is where your transformation can begin.

You might be counted amongst the millions of Americans who have a major health condition.  These conditions are now of epidemic proportions in America.  Do you think it is possible to have most of the common medical conditions tied into one common cause? I do, and I can prove it.  Do you suffer from hypertension, diabetes, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and heart disease?  Do you see the possibility of stroke, worsening heart disease, dementia, nerve damage, or cancer in your future if you don't change something that you are doing now?  What are you going to do about it?

You see, whether you just have some additional "thickness" around the middle or you have been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition such as diabetes, there is a fundamental link.  There is a biological reason for what is happening to you.  Do you want some help in solving this problem?  Is that what you want or do you just want to cover up the symptoms of the disease?

Insurance costs are on the rise. Who can afford the co-pays?

If you want to just cover up the symptoms of disease then you must surely love paying the pharmacist your $50 copays every month.  Why treat the symptom when you can solve the problem and fix the cause?  If you were in a sinking boat, would you just keep scooping water out or would you simply plug the hole that is allowing the water to come in?  Eventually, you will not be able to scoop out enough water and the boat will sink.  That is what we are doing in traditional medicine.  We are scooping out the symptoms but not fixing the leak. Let's get down to the cause, the actual root of the problem.

You must understand that I do know what I am talking about. I feel passionate about the plight of my patients and my community.  Diabetes, high blood sugar and blood pressure, and abnormal cholesterol levels are simply a late manifestation of a chronic medical problem. Much like a table with four legs, there are four main reasons for our dysfunctional health.

So what is my program anyway?

The only way to change how we feel is to change what we are doing?  I have the answers because I have gone through the same process. I want to show you the steps. I, and my team, want to guide you through this process that is based on understanding and controlling the following:

  1. Nutrition
  2. Lifestyle
  3. Environment
  4. Genetics

Can you change your genetics?  Absolutely not!  We have the genes that were given to us by our parents. However we do not have to resign ourselves to our programmed genetic fate. We are able to modify our fate to some extent.  Every decision that we make takes us down a road.  Which road will you choose?  Will you choose to go down the road of excessive copays, higher insurance costs, denials, poor health, and decreased quality of life?  I am really not blowing this out of proportion. I have been there. I know exactly what it is like.  I want you to feel better. I want you to be able to see your grandkids school plays and to enjoy your retirement.  I want you to be able to get on the floor with your kids and wrestle around. I want you to avoid that knee surgery that your doctor told you that you will need if you don't lose weight?  I want you to be able to say, "Thanks, but no thanks!"  to insulin before it is ever prescribed.

Not the Same old song and dance

Oh sure, it is easy for me to sit here and say that it is all about diet, exercise, lifestyle, stress, and nutrition mixed in with genetics.  You have heard it before, "same old song and dance."  However, I know the truth. We have been duped by all the major media players and the food industry. What you may perceive as the healthiest breakfast in the world, I will be able to show you that you might as well chew on a toxic shoestring. You are not getting nutrition in 80% of the foods that say "wholesome, all natural, whole grain, no added sugar" and other marketing slogans.  This is all marketing that is tried on thousands of people that are herded through test kitchens.  They masquerade as "healthy, low carb, high fiber, nutritious, and revolutionary" only after they found out that these are the terms to get the average consumer to buy their product. I admit it. I am the average consumer and I have been duped for a long time.  I have done the research, read the studies, gone to the conferences, and put in the time.  I have this knowledge that I want to share with you.  Would you really want to study this like I have in order to decipher the truth?  I will give it to you in a concise, easy to understand fashion.  That is my job as a physician. That is the oath that I took.

My program is based on sound medical principles:

  • Obesity is a medical problem, not a lack of self control, which is killing Americans daily.
  • We are addicted to food.
  • We are over stimulated on food additives and stimulants.

For a person that has an appetite that is not satisfied, eating less and exercising more is NOT going to work to lose weight. The brain has an amazing chemistry profile. Documented studies prove that people who are overweight have less serotonin and dopamine receptors in their midbrain. These substances control hunger.
