Don't Be A Victim!

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseVirtually every single age-related disorder including cancer, heart disease, vascular disease, arthritis and chronic inflammation can be associated with low Vitamin D levels.  It is proven that those with a higher Vitamin D level do have more resistance to upper respiratory infections, flu, and other viral infections. It has been proven that the reason we have an increase of viral infections in the winter months has been because of the lower levels of Vitamin D. As we know, the days are significantly shorter and the sun is not as bright in the winter months. In fact there was a study that showed that Dutch children with the least amount of sun exposure have double the risk of cough and three times the incidence in a runny nose in comparison to those kids with the most sun exposure.  Furthermore, the children with the lowest vitamin D levels were really eleven times more likely to develop upper respiratory infections.

So what does actually kill people with an influenza infection? The flu virus will actually induce a massive inflammatory response that is entirely capable of killing the patient. It truly is the response of the patient's immune system that kills the patient. The over production of the cytokines that create the pro-inflammatory response are what can kill the patient.  Vitamin D has been proven to down regulate the over-expression of this inflammatory response.

It is also very well documented that part of the aging process is an increase in inflammation in our body. When we have too much inflammation in our body, we are more apt to get damage to the small blood vessels, joints, and neurons (brain).

I will speak more about Vitamin D in future issues of the Daily Dose. For now, you must have your Vitamin D level checked. You can call my office and get your Vitamin D level drawn WITHOUT an office visit. I will have a standing order for you or your loved one so that we can get this done. I am committed to your health.  Have your Vitamin D level drawn.

The Vitamin D Council is a non-profit group that advocates higher Vitamin D dosing.  According to the president, Dr. John Cannell, adults need to take a higher dose to achieve optimal blood levels. 85% of blood test are far below the minimal level of 50 ng/ml. The traditional lower level is 30 ng/ml in traditional levels. I have been adhering to a level of 50 ng/ml for years. This is what the evidence states.

There are only a few incidences that preclude a higher intake of Vitamin D. One of these is a significantly elevated calcium level. This is ruled out by a simple chemistry panel. Other conditions may include Sarcoidosis, severe renal impairment, primary hyperparathyroidism, or high calcium levels.

Another problem is the so called "One a Day Vitamin". These uniform, one size fits all vitamin supplement can be high in unbalanced Vitamin A instead of Beta-Carotene.  In a recent review of 14 different over-the-counter multivitamins, the ratios were severely unbalanced. This means that the amount of preformed Vitamin A was about 4,395 IU and the average Vitamin D was about 407 IU.  An unbalanced level of Vitamin A to Vitamin D is unhealthy because in many ways these two vitamins compete with each other.  You must know and understand your Multivitamin and all your supplements.

We can cut disease and death by knowing and implementing some basic health information. Vitamin D supplementation may save your life.  During the winter months, I would recommend at least 3,000 IU of Vitamin D, if not 5,000 IU. If you want a blood test to see how low you are, stop by the office and ask to speak to our DCL representative Wendy. She will draw your blood level.  Remember, you can have that done in my office without an office visit! There is no need to pay your copay. You NEED this information!

Research proves that we do not have all of the essential minerals and vitamins in our food. In fact, we are no longer eating our "designed" diet.  As Hunters and Gatherers, we are now only hunting at the grocery store.  We consume tons of garbage a year and expect our bodies to operate just fine.  I ask you this question: "What is the difference between food and medicine?'  If I gave you a cheeseburger straight out of the bag, you most likely would eat it. However, if I handed you 5 pills, even from me, most likely you would not take them!  Food is medicine!

Do you ever experience side effects from medicine?  Sure, it is possible. Have you ever thought that maybe the reason you don't feel well is because you don't eat well.  Would you expect your car to run great if you put in bad gas? Of course not! Then why, might I ask, do you expect "your engine" to run great?  It really is kind of silly, isn't it?
