Ancient Remedies: An Onion A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseOnce a huge skeptic of natural remedies, I have grown to see the light. If it was good enough for Grandma, then it was good enough for my mom and then good enough for me. One of the little facts that I was skeptical of was the fact that an onion is actually quite good for you. How is that possible? There are natural chemicals in the onion that are very beneficial. The ancient Greeks used the Onions like we use candy. They ate the onions readily, drank their juice, and used them as a balm. The chemical that is in the onion is called the thiosulfinates  It is this chemical, which has a sulfur compound, will help to reduce diabetes symptoms and has been associated with cardiovascular protection. There is another component that is in onions that is called Quercetin.  It is this flavanoid that will prevent inflammation that is associated with allergies, protects against ulcers of the stomach and colon, and also protective against some cancers and esophageal disease.

There was a recent study that I read that was published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. In this study the researchers outlined the fact that the compound Quercetin actually improved performance. Therefore, this is an Olympic sized performance enhancer that is legal in athletics. There are actually over three times the amount of Quercetin than what is found in apples or tea. Your best bet is to eat them raw or very lightly cooked because heat will destroy some of the natural chemicals that are protective in the onion.

The compound, Quercetin, is actually shown to reduce the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol. This is truly an amazing compound. I would have to say that I am not a huge fan of the taste of onions. However, after doing this research, I guess I am going to have to start with some light, sweet, Vidalia onions.  Oh my!

I just knew there was a reason I loved to grow onions!
And leeks... And garlic.... and green onions.... and scallions....
