As part of my board certification in weight loss medicine, I have been to numerous conferences. There was a fantastic conference in 2003 that changed my life. The greatest minds in weight loss and improved living were in attendance. Similar to the last Daily Dose, I am going to list some more facts for you. I think bullet points give the most easy to "digest" information.
- Mice that do not have insulin receptors on their cell membranes have a much harder time in gaining fat. This demonstrates that insulin is the key to fat storage and fat gain.
- Since the 1980's fat consumption has decreased by 19% and obesity has become the number one cause of preventable death in America
- This fact coincides with an increase in carb consumption by 23%. Further substantiating that it is insulin that leads to fat storage.
- Low carb diets, such as my program, improve all aspects of the Metabolic Syndrome: Abnormal lipids, High Blood Pressure, Elevated Blood Sugar and Obesity
- A low carb diet will tend to suppress appetite
- Protein increases satiety more than any other macronutrient
- The midbrain responds to carbohydrates the same way that it responds to addictive substances--maybe that is why we are all carbohydrate addicts?
- One half hour of activity leads to lower triglycerides the next day (I wonder how much that co-pay is?)
- Exercise keeps the cell's mitochondria active and decreases the level of insulin resistance
- 47% of the population is suffering from Metabolic Syndrome.
Do you want to know what Metabolic Syndrome really is? Be sure to check out the Daily Dose for Wednesday!

Doctor's Supplements
Research proves that we do not have all of the essential minerals and vitamins in our food. In fact, we are no longer eating our "designed" diet. As Hunters and Gatherers, we are now only hunting at the grocery store. We consume tons of garbage a year and expect our bodies to operate just fine. I ask you this question: "What is the difference between food and medicine?' If I gave you a cheeseburger straight out of the bag, you most likely would eat it. However, if I handed you 5 pills, even from me, most likely you would not take them! Food is medicine!
Do you ever experience side effects from medicine? Sure, it is possible. Have you ever thought that maybe the reason you don't feel well is because you don't eat well. Would you expect your car to run great if you put in bad gas? Of course not! Then why, might I ask, do you expect "your engine" to run great? It really is kind of silly, isn't it?
