How Did I Get So Tired?

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseWe left off by discussing Mary and how her life had changed. When I spoke to Mary about her fatigue, I asked her to remember the last time that she felt well. I wanted to get a time line from her. One of the things that I really stress in my practice is self awareness and self monitoring. I think it's very important for everyone to understand their own personal triggers when it comes to overeating and carbohydrate addiction. This also applies to emotional triggers.

 
The same applies to hormonal imbalances. We just don't get there overnight. I asked her to relate to me the last time that she felt well. She went back to the birth of her last child. To her that seemed to be a turning point. We then discussed the two years before this and I wanted her to write down the big events leading up to this point. 
 
The working diagnosis in my mind for Mary has been adrenal fatigue. Some of the most common symptoms of adrenal fatigue are:
  • Always tired
  • Not able to get up easy in the morning
  • Lack of energy
  • Craving Salt
  • No desire for intimacy
  • Prolonged recovery from illnesses or surgeries
  • Worsening PMS
  • Living in a "brain fog"
  • More awake in the evening "wired but tired"
It is important to realize that having adrenal fatigue really comes in stages. It is not something that happens overnight. In order to help with this situation it is very important to outline how it happened. How can we manage a condition that we can not even measure or understand the precipitating event?
 
The timeline that I gave her looked something like this:
 
List all surgeries, dental work, emotional events, new medications, hospital visits and surgeries. This list should include the date and the main event associated with all three categories. This helped Mary to see that she had really been through a lot over the past few years.  She was able to begin the process of focusing her attention on herself for a change.
 
From here we went on to do some evaluation of the adrenal. We found that she had normal adrenal function when you put it in context with traditional medicine. However, she was at the very low end of normal. When you think of the bell shaped curve, does anyone really want to be at the extremes or do most people want to be somewhere in the middle?  We all want to be above average but when it comes to our bodies we just really want to live in an optimized state.
 
We needed to get Mary back in balance. We made a plan.
 
Reversal of adrenal fatigue starts with the basics as listed below:
  • Lifestyle changes including specific types of rest and enjoyment
  • Food intake identification and possible changes
  • Specific Beverage intake
  • Mental attitude that remains positive
 
As I explained to Mary, the ability to reverse adrenal fatigue is really up to her. It is not an overnight process.  I can give her all the advice in the world. I can replace her hormones if needed, but if we are not able to maintain the changes that are necessary, the problem will continue and even worsen. She has to make these changes permanent. New habits are a must.
 
If you think that you have some component of adrenal fatigue, I want you to write down your list of life's triggers. Try and isolate the events in your life that led up to this moment of fatigue and, for some of you, despair. I will walk you through a typical adrenal recovery plan over the next few days and you can decide if you want to make these changes.

Research proves that we do not have all of the essential minerals and vitamins in our food.
