Dr. Haendiges' Medical Weight Loss

Why do we need change anyway?

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DosePart of my research and my new focus is to understand why people consume food that they do and when they do. The other question is, how does all of this fit together? What does our current state of nutrition have to do with our health anyway?

A simple computer search of the top 10 foods that Americans buy at the grocery store is actually quite eye opening. I pulled up a Google search on the top 10 foods and this is what I found:
  1. Carbonated Beverages - $12 Billion
  2. Milk  $11.2 Billion
  3. Fresh bread and rolls - $9.57 Billion
  4. Beer / Ale / Hard Cider - $8.17 Billion
  5. Salty Snacks - $8.09 Billion
  6. Natural Cheese - $7.64 Billion
  7. Frozen Dinners / entrees - $6.13 Billion
  8. Cold Cereal - $6.11 Billion
  9. Wine - $5.49 Billion
  10. Cigarettes - $4.63 Billion

This information came from information obtained from the UPC scan. This data was not collected on fresh foods and perishable so maybe that is why meat and vegetables were not included. However, I think that this information is probably pretty accurate.

I then did a little research on the 10 most popular foods that Americans eat.  This was very interesting also.
  1. Hamburgers
  2. Hot Dogs
  3. French Fries
  4. Oreo Cookies
  5. Pizza
  6. Soda
  7. Chicken Tenders
  8. Ice Cream
  9. Donuts
  10. Potato Chips

The above list is what people actually eat.  If you look at this list it is going to be a little different than the first one because the first one is what people buy at the grocery store. The second list is what people eat. This will include fast food, restaurants, and the grocery.  If you think about your own diet, do you eat some of these things?

A rule of thumb when grocery shopping is to actually shop around the perimeter of the store. It is the aisles of the grocery store that lead to the highly processed, empty calorie convenience food that is really robbing Americans of their health and subsequently their happiness (in many ways).

Did you know, that unless marked otherwise, all hamburger contains red dye to keep that fresh appearance. Normal hamburger meat is handled for so long before it is consumed that it will start to undergo putrefaction. Once this occurs the meat will turn a greenish brown color. This is relatively quick in the process and the red dye is used to cover this up. During all of this handling of the meat, bacteria is introduced. I used to love a hamburger steak made on the grill. After doing my research, I am done with hamburger!

Hot dogs are another entity altogether. Hot dogs are really high in nitrites that are clearly associated with stomach cancers and leukemia. There are many fillers used in hot dogs including collagen casings, cereal, non-fat dry milk, and soy. This might be up to 40% of the hot dogs. Another 40% of its contents are undisclosed saturated fats. This is truly a mystery meat.  Now, I am not advocating doing away with hot dogs and hamburgers all together. However, I do think we need to use strict moderation when consuming this "American Favorites."

French fries are made from potatoes that are grown in the ground that is littered with pesticides and herbicides.  I found an interesting fact: Most potato farmers will grow their own personal consumption potatoes in an organic fashion. Once these potatoes are heated up in a deep fryer, there is a release of acrylimide which is a known cancer causing agent. Also, french fries and potatoes have a very high glycemic index which means it turns to sugar very quickly in our bodies. In many ways, it is like eating a candy bar.

On Monday I am going to talk about the other items in our list. Please make sure that you read the labels on your food. We are truly having the "wool pulled over our eyes" when it comes to our health and nutrition.

This past weekend I went to Missouri. As I came through Illinois, my diesel fuel gelled up. I lost power in my vehicle. That was really quite the experience.  While I was waiting for the fuel to warm up, I was thinking about my patients. So many of my patients come to me complaining of being tired, no libido, depressed, and stressed.  My engine on Saturday was stressed and depressed also. The reason that both of these engines, my diesel and our bodies, do not run with the fuel is all gelled up and thick. If you think about it, how can we expect our bodies' engine to run well when we put junk fuel into it?  Remember, read the labels. You would be surprised at what you are really eating. On Monday, I am going to talk about Oreo Cookies (My favorite!)

Research proves that we do not have all of the essential minerals and vitamins in our food. In fact, we are no longer eating our "designed" diet.  As Hunters and Gatherers, we are now only hunting at the grocery store.  We consume tons of garbage a year and expect our bodies to operate just fine.  I ask you this question: "What is the difference between food and medicine?'  If I gave you a cheeseburger straight out of the bag, you most likely would eat it. However, if I handed you 5 pills, even from me, most likely you would not take them!  Food is medicine!

Do you ever experience side effects from medicine?  Sure, it is possible. Have you ever thought that maybe the reason you don't feel well is because you don't eat well.  Would you expect your car to run great if you put in bad gas? Of course not! Then why, might I ask, do you expect "your engine" to run great?  It really is kind of silly, isn't it?
