What's in your adrenals?

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseThere are many glands that produce hormones that are in our bodies. These hormones are able to communicate messages to the brain and the body by their release from the glands. Each hormone has a very specific target and will communicate its message by locking into specific receptors on the cells. Each hormone is regulated by a very specific feedback loop or relay system that is able to adjust the amount of hormone that is excreted.

How Did I Get So Tired?

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseWe left off by discussing Mary and how her life had changed. When I spoke to Mary about her fatigue, I asked her to remember the last time that she felt well. I wanted to get a time line from her. One of the things that I really stress in my practice is self awareness and self monitoring. I think it's very important for everyone to understand their own personal triggers when it comes to overeating and carbohydrate addiction. This also applies to emotional triggers.

I am so tired!

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily Dose"Your labs are normal so you must be depressed." Mary told me of what her doctor had said.

Mary was hopeless. She was told that she was depressed and needed to take an anti-depressant.

I want to share Mary's story with you.

Are You Really What You Eat?

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseIf that is the case, then we are really SAD.  Do you know what SAD stands for?  The Standard American Diet.  If we are what we eat, we would all be quarter pounders, fries, and a large coke.  I know that sounds silly, but does it, really?

And now, The Rest of the Story

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseRemember yesterday when we introduced the term

Diabesity? Okay, now I am going to finish the story.  The ACCORD study showed that the diabetics that had too tight of sugar control had an increased risk of death. How is this really possible?

Doc, Can I Change This?

Medical Weight Loss Newsletter | Daily DoseMany times throughout the course of my day I will have to tell someone that they are headed for diabetes.  Doctors use all kinds of terms for this:  Pre-Diabetes, Glucose Intolerance, Insulin Resistance, or Borderline Diabetic.  In essence, they all mean the same thing. This is very difficult to tell my patients.  I know that this will strike fear in their minds.  Most of the time, there is a fear of losing control of their health or control of their life.  Most of the time my patients will feel hopeless and worried. There is a concern of long term medications for the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, or eye disease.  Families worry about the health of their loved one. The cycle continues.
